Foo Fighters headlining BlizzCon concert

Sarcasm aside, Dave is actually right in that the Foo Fighters are actually the most relevant band Blizzard has booked for Blizzcon. I mean, The Offspring, anyone? It’s actually kinda surprising that the Foo Fighters actually agreed to do it since they’re selling out arenas on their own tour this fall and don’t necessarily “need” the money.

I guess when you’re making $175 a head, you can afford to splurge on festivities entertainment. Seems almost like a waste of money since tickets for Blizzcon already sold out in May. They could have booked Har Mar Superstar to play the ‘Con and no one would think any less of them.

You know what, good on Blizzard. Getting the Foo was probably unnecessary from a business perspective, but going that extra step in delighting their fans only serves to bolster their legendary brand loyalty.

“We’re pretty sure that in the future, music historians will look back at BlizzCon 2011 as the unquestionable pinnacle of Foo Fighters’ long and illustrious career,” said Foo Fighters lead Dave Grohl in the announcement. “We look forward to living up to that prediction by bringing the Horde and Alliance together to rock the hell out of Anaheim next month.”

Rumor/Leak of the Day – Upcoming Blizzard Product Slate

And here’s your rumor of the day. It’s a leaked slide from a probable internal Blizzard presentation a few months ago. Other than a Diablo 3 release date of Q4 2012, most of the upcoming release schedule is fairly predictable.

Well other than this:

Titan
Yeah, that’s Blizzard’s new MMOFPS and I might have hinted at that in the past but I don’t have a lot of extra information about it and the release date is just an estimation. Don’t assume that it will be released by the end of 2013 based on that document, it would be very stupid. (Edit: Titan is a new game by the way, not an existing IP. But I’m really not sure what’s the plan with it, I just know that the FPS bit is most likely here to stay)

Postgame: Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty

If there had to be one title to act as the envoy for the video games industry in 2010 it would have to be Starcraft 2.

You’d be hard pressed to find any other game appeals to everyone from the 30 minutes a day casual player all the way up to the professional Korean player making seven figures with an entourage of bodyguards and female groupies.

Yes, you read correctly. Seven figures. Groupies. Entering live tournaments on rock stages on a speedboat.

There’s three audiences that I think should run out and give this game a shot:

  1. Tower defense game junkies (whether it’s on your phone, iPad, computer, or console)
  2. People who already enjoy real time strategy games (How can you like RTS games and not at least give Starcraft 2 a shot? That’s like saying I like action movies, but I refuse to watch Inception.)
  3. Professional Starcraft players. (though I think those don’t really need to read this review)

Starcraft 2 is an interesting game because it’s one that’s physically impossible to play on any current console. It doesn’t mean that the game is that complex, it just means that it’s a genre that’s best controlled with a mouse and keyboard due to the nature of the tasks needed to be done. The game will run on almost any modern computer, Mac or PC alike, so chances are if you own a computer made within the last few years, you can play it.

Activision Blizzard

This morning, a wholly unexpected press release went out announcing that Activision and Vivendi/Universal Games (including Blizzard entertainment) are set to merge, creating the largest game-publisher in the world. The new company will be boringly named “Activision Blizzard”.

So now we have Activision Blizzard, EA, Ubisoft, THQ, and 2k Games.

Hmm… this uncannily looks like Universal Music, Sony Music, BMG, EMI, and Warner…
